Matcha Lemonade: The Soda Alternative That Actually Works

Published: 2026-05-25

Most soda alternatives are either boring or trying too hard. Matcha lemonade is neither. It's tart, earthy, faintly sweet and bright green, and it's a genuinely good swap for the fizzy drinks you're trying to cut back on.

Why look for a soda alternative?

New Zealanders drink a lot of soda. It's cold, convenient and social. The catch is the sugar: a typical full-sugar can has around 30–40 g. Diet versions swap the sugar for sweeteners, which some people prefer to avoid.

What most soda drinkers really want is the experience: something cold, fizzy and refreshing. Matcha lemonade gives you exactly that.

What matcha lemonade actually is

At its simplest: matcha powder, lemon juice, a touch of sweetness and cold sparkling water. The matcha brings earthy depth and a little caffeine. The lemon brings acidity and brightness. The bubbles bring the soda.

Luma uses real matcha and Hawke's Bay lemon and lime juice. A 330 ml can of Luma contains 42–67 mg of caffeine, depending on the batch of matcha.

How it compares with regular lemonade soda

  • Regular lemon-lime soda: sugar, water, flavouring, no caffeine
  • Matcha lemonade: real matcha (which naturally contains caffeine and L-theanine), citrus juice and bubbles

It's not a remedy, and it's not trying to be. It's a drink you actually want to have.

The NZ angle

Kiwis are increasingly into drinks that taste great and are made with real ingredients. Kombucha showed the way. Matcha soda is less sour than kombucha and more approachable in flavour.

How to drink it

Cold is the only way. Over ice, ideally. The cold softens the earthiness of the matcha and lets the citrus come through. A good matcha lemonade should just taste delicious.

If you're replacing an afternoon lemon-lime soda habit, matcha lemonade is an easy swap to try.
