Matcha vs Coffee in the Afternoon: What's Actually Different

Published: 2026-04-27

You know the 3pm moment. Lunch is done, the inbox isn't, and you're standing in front of the fridge or the coffee machine deciding what to have. Here's how matcha and coffee actually compare.

Caffeine per serve

  • Standard café coffee: roughly 80–150 mg, depending on shots and beans
  • Matcha (1–2 g powder): roughly 30–70 mg
  • Luma Matcha Soda: 42–67 mg per 330 ml can (matcha varies by batch)

The biggest practical difference is the dose: a can of Luma has less caffeine than a typical café coffee.

How long caffeine stays around

Caffeine's half-life (the time it takes your body to clear half of it) is commonly quoted at around 5–6 hours for healthy adults, though it varies a lot from person to person. That's why many people stop drinking coffee after midday. Whatever you drink, a smaller dose in the afternoon means less caffeine still around in the evening.

What else is in matcha?

Coffee and matcha come from completely different plants. Matcha is ground whole tea leaves, so as well as caffeine it naturally contains L-theanine (an amino acid found in tea) and catechins such as EGCG. Researchers are studying these compounds, and we'd rather tell you what's in the drink than promise what it will do.

Taste and temperature

This is where it's simply a different experience. A hot flat white is rich and milky. A matcha soda is cold, sparkling and citrusy, with an earthy matcha finish. On a warm afternoon, a cold can can feel like a better fit than another hot coffee.

Matcha soda in the afternoon

The old image of matcha is ceremonial and fiddly: a bowl, a bamboo whisk, a ritual. Matcha soda takes all that away. No milk, no equipment, no queue. Just open the can.

If coffee is your afternoon default, try swapping it for a matcha soda for a couple of weeks and see how you like it.

The bottom line

Matcha isn't "coffee-lite". It's a different drink: a different plant, a different flavour and less caffeine per serve. If you want a cold, fizzy afternoon drink with a moderate amount of caffeine, matcha soda is worth a try.
