Matcha Soda vs Coffee (NZ)

Published: 2026-04-25

Why I drink matcha soda

When I started making matcha soda, it wasn't just a product idea. It was personal. I lived in Berlin for ten years, and a cold matcha soda became part of my day. When I moved home to New Zealand, I couldn't find anything like it, so I started making my own.

For years my afternoon default was a fizzy soft drink or another coffee. Matcha soda gave me something different to reach for: cold, sparkling, and lighter than both.

What is matcha?

Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder made from shade-grown tea leaves. With regular green tea, you brew the leaves and throw them away. With matcha, the whole leaf is ground and goes into the drink.

Interest in matcha keeps growing in New Zealand. Searches like matcha latte NZ, matcha powder NZ and matcha Auckland show plenty of Kiwis are curious about something other than the daily flat white.

What does matcha taste like?

  • Earthy and grassy
  • Slightly sweet, with a savoury umami note
  • Not bitter, if the matcha is good quality and well prepared

In a soda, matcha gets lighter and brighter. With lemon and lime it tastes tangy, a little sweet, and very easy to drink cold.

Caffeine: matcha soda vs coffee

This is the question I get asked most. Typical amounts:

  • Double-shot flat white: roughly 120–150 mg caffeine
  • Luma Matcha Soda: 42–67 mg per 330 ml can (matcha varies by batch)

So a can of Luma has less caffeine than a typical café coffee. Matcha also naturally contains L-theanine, an amino acid found in tea leaves. Researchers are studying how L-theanine and caffeine interact; we're not going to make promises about what it does for you. What we can tell you is what's in the can.

Matcha soda vs regular soda

A standard can of cola has around 35 g of sugar. Luma is built as a lighter alternative: real matcha, Hawke's Bay lemon and lime juice, and bubbles. If what you really want from a soda is something cold and fizzy at 3pm, it's an easy swap.

Matcha soda vs matcha latte

Most Kiwis meet matcha as a matcha latte. Lattes are comforting, but they're usually milky and heavy. Matcha soda is different:

  • Light, fizzy and cold
  • Dairy-free and vegan
  • Ready to drink, no café or whisk needed
  • Made for summer, the drive home, or a night off alcohol

Why matcha quality matters

  • Good matcha is a vivid green
  • It tastes smooth, not harsh
  • Organic matcha is grown without synthetic pesticides

Whether you're buying matcha powder NZ online or a ready-made drink, quality is what makes the difference in taste.

FAQ: matcha soda and caffeine

How much caffeine is in Luma Matcha Soda?

42–67 mg per 330 ml can. Matcha varies from batch to batch, so we give a range.

How much caffeine is in a double-shot coffee?

Usually around 120–150 mg, depending on the beans and the café.

Can matcha soda replace coffee?

For me, in the afternoon, yes. It's a personal choice. Some people swap one coffee a day, others keep both.

Final thoughts

Swapping my afternoon soft drink and extra coffee for a cold matcha soda was one of the simplest changes I've made. If you're in NZ and curious about matcha vs coffee, my advice is simple: try a can and see what you think.
